In 1856, drugstore owner, Frederick Stearns, started to manufacture his own prescription drugs in his one room workshop with a single assistance. By 1881, the Stearns company was one of the country's major drug manufacturers. In 1882, Stearns built a new three story, brick laboratory with three acres of flooring. Branch laboratories were established in San Francisco, California and Windsor, Ontario.

Following a merger with Winthrop Chemical Co., Winthrop-Stearns amalgamated with Sterling Drugs in 1944.
