South Maui offers a strand of 4 coastal communities and stretches from Ma'alaea near the West Maui Mountains to Makena on the slopes of Haleakala. South Maui offers a 12-mile stretch of coastline and has an annual rainfall of only 10-inches a year making this region of Maui: sunny, sandy, sublime, and splendid.
Ma'alaea, a bustling center of activity offering: great shopping and dining, the Maui Ocean Center (aquarium), condominiums, a long stretch of sandy shores, a harbor, and much more. The Maui Ocean Center is the largest reef aquarium in the United States and allows you to view lots of sea creatures like: sharks, fish, sea turtles, and much more. There is a hands-on area where you can feel creatures like: sea stars, sea cucumbers, and much more. The Ma'alaea Harbor Shops right next door offer some great dining and shopping. There are some restaurants in Ma'alaea not in the Ma'alaea Harbor Shops that are also easily accessible as well.
Kihei is next and offers an abundance: of homes, hotels, resorts, condominiums, golf courses, beaches, shopping, dining, schools, and much more.
Wailea is third and offers: 5 topnotch waterfront resorts, tree-lined avenues, The Shops at Wailea - a luxurious and eye-catching shopping district in Wailea, 3 picturesque golf courses, high-end residences, beautiful crescent-shaped beaches, and much more.
The final community/area is Makena. Makena offers: intriguing homes, diverse coastline, lava landscapes with NARROW roads, one hotel (Makena Beach & Golf Resort), golf, and much more. Makena's lava landscapes can be easily found once you drive past the Makena Beach and Golf Resort. Just be aware that the road past the Makena Beach and Golf Resort gets narrow and is somewhat challenging to drive on.
