Cypress Pond is one of Albany, Georgia's original, grand plantations. At 1,638 acres, its gently rolling fields, orderly pecan orchards and moss-draped Cypress stands have been inhabited by slaves and farmers, hunters and sportsmen, and most recently, boy scouts and executives visiting a luxury retreat. The plantation boasts an antebellum mansion, cabins, guest houses, and barns alongside some of the most prized and productive farmland in the country. Named for an 85-acre central lake, the property was acquired by New Communities, Inc, a non-profit 501(c)(4) in 2011.

In her book, The Courage to Hope, written with Catherine Whitney, Sherrod describes the vision for Cypress Pond:

“We wanted a property where we could both farm the land and also nurture the minds of people across the nation. Our land would become a home for progressive thought and action. Cypress Pond was the ideal setting, and we were mindful that there was a certain moral justice to acquiring a former slave plantation to promote economic opportunity for farmers and dialogue among the races.”
