Named for the profusion of Ocotillo plants, Ocotillo Overlook is formed by the confluence of Red House canyon and the Rio Grande. From this point in early May 1873, Capt. John L Bullis, Commander, Seminole Scouts 24th U.S. Infantry Regiment, spotted a band of marauders on the opposite side of the Rio Grande, in Mexico, heading down river toward the crossing at Dryden. He ordered his troops to rush to the crossing, arriving later in the day, to ambush the marauders as they crossed the river under cover of darkness.
