arena, 2013_construction
The third major extension to the SECC complex, originally billed as "Scotland's National Arena". It has a projected seating capacity of 12,000, and has been designed from the "inside-out" to ensure all seats have a perfect line of sight to the stage, and acoustics have been a major design consideration after the disappointing SECC and Royal Concert Hall. The name was changed to "The Hydro", following a sponsorship deal with Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), the parent company of Scottish Hydro-electric.
The bowl shaped building was designed by Foster and Associates, was opened in September 2013.
