27 feet wide canal tunnel, 3027 yards (2768 meters approx 2.4 miles) long, opened on 20th August 1858.

The tunnel was built to alleviate long delays caused by Dudley Tunnel, which had no towpath and was only wide enough for one-way traffic.

The Netherton has towpaths on both sides, and was originally lit by gas.
