The Rinsi Orthodox Church on Muhu Island was founded in 1847. In 1850, the church was allocated land from the Tamse Crown Manor for the construction of a church building and a cemetery. The five-domed stone church was designed by Riga architect Heinrich Scheel for Muhu Island. The construction of the Muhu-Rinsi Orthodox Church was completed in 1873 and the church was consecrated on October 22 of the same year by the Archbishop of Riga and Miitavi Veniamin (Karelin) in honor of the miracle-working Kazan Icon. The Rinsi Church has preserved icons painted (written) by a famous Muhu resident, the Finnish Orthodox Archbishop Herman Aava. The Muhu-Rinsi Orthodox sanctuary was renovated in 1998. During the renovation work, new roofs were built for the church. The Muhu-Rinsi Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is used by the EAÕK Muhu-Rinsi Virgin Mary Kazan Icon Congregation.
