Holy Family is a private, independent traditionalist Catholic chapel located behind a guarded gate. It is not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

The Holy Family Catholic Church would not be of so much interest if its existence had not sparked a firestorm in 2003 when The New York Times revealed that the church was for Gibson and fellow parishioners who subscribed to 16th century Catholic values, and did not agree with Vatican rulings of 1965 that, among other things, absolved Jews of Christ’s death--as Gibson was getting ready to release 2004's "The Passion of the Christ." Gibson later made anti-semetic comments during a drunk driving arrest in 2006.

Its 70 or so members are traditional Catholics, including some that hold to sedevacantism. In common with other traditionalists, they reject many of the reforms inspired by the Second Vatican Council and seek to worship according to traditional Roman Catholic rites including the Tridentine Mass.

The Rev. Clement Procopio, a Franciscan priest, was instructed not to offer mass in the Diocese by Phoenix Bishop Thomas J. O'Brien. The chapel is supported by the non-profit A.P. Reilly Foundation, which is funded by actor/director Mel Gibson and named after his late mother. According to 2008 IRS filings, the foundation’s assets, including real property, total $42 million
