Founded in 1761 by Philip of Bourbon and opened to the public in 1769, the historical Palatina library is located in the Pilotta Palace, next to the Farnese Theatre and the National Gallery.

The library is divided into three halls: the Marie Louise Hall, the Dante Hall, frescoed by Scaramuzza with scenes from Dante's Divine Comedy and the Petitot Gallery, preserving antique bookcases.

It originally contained 40.000 volumes and was later extended through donations and purchases, including the De Rossi Oriental Fund, the private library of the Dukes of Bourbon-Parma, and the Ortalli collection of prints. Nowadays the library owns over 700.000 volumes, 3.000 incunabula, 6.600 manuscripts, 50.000 prints, illuminated manuscripts of the 16th and the 17th centuries. turismo.comune.parma.it/
