One of the prestigious research wing of KAU. Plant Biotechnology research has been progressing at the Kerala Agricultural University since 1981. The initial emphasis was on the in vitro propagation of horticultural crops. Protocols were developed for the rapid in vitro cloning of elite plants of jack, banana (Nendran and Red Banana), pineapple, pepper, cardamom, ginger, vanilla, orchids, anthurium, rose, gladiolus, ornamental foliage plants (alocasia and syngonium), medicinal plants (kaempferia, adathoda, plumbago, aristalochia, smilax and holostemma) as well as forest species (rosewood and eucalyptus). Evaluation of the performance of the plants in farmers’ fields is in progress. Research on the in vitro propagation of mango, cashew, cocoa, nutmeg, clove, cimamon, coconut, orchids, ornamental foliage plants and medicinal plants is ongoing.
