This channel was cut during WWI during German occupation of the Palauan Islands. It is now used as a passage way to get to the southern rock island and for the many dive operations in Palau. There is a popular dive site nearby given the name "German Channel" where manta rays frequent (see Wikipedia Link).

  • Don't think so. Germany acquired Palau in 1899 from Spain. Following World War I control of the islands passed to the Japanese under the 1919 Treaty of Versailles.
