  • This is a landmark of the old gates of Porta Vaga. THe scale replica built on this road island is the best representation of the old spanish stronghold... Porta Vaga. Porta Vaga is a walled city comparable to the Intramurus or Fort Santiago in Manila. There was word going around that the National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal based his novel "Noli Me Tangere" in the life of this old city during the Snanish Era. Within the area occupied by Porta Vaga; nine (9) Catholic Churches were built; the remains of one of them can still be seen standing near the house of the present mayor of the city... the old belfry of Sta. Monica. a.k.a. Simborio. Obviously, much of the City's history is apparently lost in the consciousness of the modern city dwellers. Much can be blamed to misplaced city priorities... Too much politics and too little emphasis placed on the importance of education and cultural identity. The best cultural walking dictionary or encyclopedia who is still alive today would be Tita Puring Ballesteros. Another reliable resource would be Catholic Priest Virgilio Mendoza.
