The Atkinson Clock Tower was built in memory the first District officer of Jesselton, Francis George Atkinson. He died of 'Borneo fever 'in 1902 at the age of28.The clock was originally lit up at night acted as a beacon for shipping. It was one of three buildings that survived the destruction of the Second World War. Over the year it has undergone renovations and repair but has managed to retain most of its original characteristics.
Prominently located on the opposite of Jalan Gaya, this quaint old clock tower was buildinson,(1901-19 in 1905 in memory of the one of the town earliest District Officers, Francis George Atk02).As late as 1956, the lights of the clock tower were used as navigation aids by local shipping. Today, the tower is partially obscured surrounding buildings.
