The James Brown House is a historic 2-story Federal-style building completed in 1812. It was originally the home of James Brown, an African-American United States Revolutionary War veteran, who was the proprietor of a tobacco store on the ground floor of the house. At the time of the building's construction, the house was only several feet from the shoreline of the Hudson River, although subsequent urban development has since filled in land that has increased the distance to the shore.

It is one of the few existing examples of Federal architecture in New York. Its ground level is the site of The Ear Inn, which opened in 1817, making it one of the oldest existing taverns in New York City. During Prohibition era, the bar remained open as a speakeasy. It became the Ear Inn to avoid going through the Landmark Commission and so simply changed the name to Ear from Bar. Today, the building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a New York City Landmark.

  • The EAR is also located on what was once the shoreline of Manahattan, and serves the finest home fries known to mankind.
