castle, listed building / architectural heritage
The Castle was mentioned for the first time under the name “Waldeckh“ around the year 1315. In 1715, the Castle was finished under the coordination of the famous architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.
Castle Neuwaldegg was purchased by auction in 1715 by Franz Moritz Graf Lacy, who was Queen Maria Theresa’s field marshal and Emperor Josef II’s counselor. The baroque garden was projected in terraces and even includes a dwarf gallery (ger. “Zwergerlgalerieâ€). In 1801, the castle and the park came into the property of the Schwarzenberg family. Then, in 1951, the Castle passed into the ownership of the Archdiocese in Vienna. In the period between 1978 and 1986, the interior was adapted in order to match its educational orientation and, in 1985, the municipality of Vienna bought the Schwarzenberg park and turned it into an area of local recreation.
In 2002 the private foundation “The Educational Initiative for Central and Eastern Europe†took over the Castle and facilitated its new utilization together with its baroque garden for events of all sorts.
