This 246 foot high cinder cone marks one of the Mojave Desert's finest examples of vescular pahoehoe lava fields . If you are hiking up to the crater make sure you have good shoes or boots and plenty of water.
At least four co-axial malic tephra cinder cones dating from 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. No evidence of pyroclastic surges. The Amboy lava field covers about 23 square miles. It consists mostly of undifferentiated flows of relatively dense de-gassed pahoehoe forming a hummocky terrain, characterized by numerous tumuli and pressure ridges. These lava flows have divided Bristol Lake (now dry) into two separate playas.
