Forest of Japanese Nutmeg-Yew (torreya nucifera) at Geumtapsa in Goheunggun

The torreya nucifera (Nutmeg-Yew) nut tree, an evergreen, is native to Japan and it is used for lumber and ornamentation. It grows on the southern islands and mountains of the coastal region, including Cheju Island in Korea.

It has a unique fragrance and the leaf is hard and pointed like a thorn. The fruit is used in medicine and its oil from seed is used in Japanese cooking.

Processed and shaped with ease, the tree's wood is mostly used for she1ving and furniture. The wood is also highly prized for making Go (game) boards.

There are also cherry, zelkova and persimmon trees in front of the temple, with several tall camellias at the back as well.

Torreya-yew nut trees are approximately 10m/32ft high, and the biggest one in the forest is 50cm/20in in diameter at the base.
