About Munger Tourism
Munger was earlier known as Monghyr in the British days, and has a rich cultural past. Situated in Munger district in Bihar, the town was famous for the manufacture of iron products like swords and firearms. It was conquered by Mohammad Khilji in 1197, and is mentioned as a place of strategic military importance in the chronicles of that period. During Akbar’s regime, Monghyr was the seat of power of his general, Todar Mal and later Nawab Mir Quasim shifted the capital from Murshidabad to Munger, to stay away from British control. Surrounded by the Ganges on three sides and Kharagpur hills on the other side, Munger is a nature lover’s paradise. Quiet, serene and picturesque, with many religious and historic locations Munger remains a popular travel destination.

The Bihar School of Yoga established by Swami Satyanad Saraswati is another landmark in this small but lovely town. The River Ganges is central to the economy and social life of this town. The Durga Pooja and Chath celebrations are quite famous in the nearby areas. |

Munger is a very lovely town. It also has a mention in the Mahabhharat. Its name is derived from Mudgal Rishi. The beautiful Munger fort dates back to Mahabharat and it is said "Karan" son of Kunti built this fort but later on when it was being ruined Mir Quasim got it renovated. The tunnel very close to Kasht Harni Ghat of the Ganga stands to state an interesting tale. In 1947 I dared to go inside the tunnel but hardly went 10-12 steps on its bending ,there was very foul smell as a result of which I took a right about turn . There was complete darkness in the tunnel.
Near the southern gate of the fort there stood a leafless tree which shook from the root to the branches if a branch was shaken. The school of Yoga stands now near that tree. The holy places like Sita Kund and Chandi Asthan are located at a distance of about six kilometers from Munger town.
Mir Quasim had shifted his capital to Munger. The famous railway work shop and Cigarett factory also stand very close to Munger. It is strange the water of Sita Kund is very hot and boiling but of other kunds adjecent to this kund the water is cold. This town was devasted by the earth quack of 1934 but now it is very beautiful and prosperous town. The renouned Shri Krishna Seva Sadan stands near the eastern gate of the fort where Dr. S.K.Sinha the first Chief Minister of Bihar donated all his books to this library.

my munger is a historical place.. it was called Anga..during the time of mahabharata.. capital of king Karna.. then later on it became mugdalpuri.. it was during Mughals it came to be known as Munger.. british wrote it as Monghyr.
the last king of Bengal Mir Zafer made Munger his capital. It was the Battle Of Buxur in which Mir Zafar was defeated and his Whole family was murdered at the mouth of a cave at Kshtaharni Ghat. Their graves are still there. but during British Empire this place became the capital of Gun. they opened a gun factory in Munger.. from then on the sound of gun still hounds this city.
I am jounralist at Delhi.. working in India TV as Senior Producer.. my home is on Shah Zuber Road.. E mail.dr.manishkumar@indiatvnews.com |
