Subject of a $7 million rehabilitation in 2007, the Gould Tunnel was constructed in 1864 by the Steubenville and Indiana Railroad, a division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The tunnel shortened the line by 2.18 miles and avoided a long dangerous bend incorporated into the original 1855 railroad layout.
