office building, high-rise, 1965_construction, commercial building, International style architecture
322-foot, 25-story "wedding cake" International-style office building completed in 1965. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons, it is clad in dark-grey steel and glass above a 2-story base. The ground floor is lined with plate-glass and stainless-steel storefronts, except for the south end of the east facade on the avenue, where the double-height main entrance is located. It has traditional glass doors flanking a revolving door, with two large glass panes above at the 2nd floor level. At the northeast corner, there is a recessed, notched storefront entrance with glass double-doors, and the upper floors over hanging it. The main lobby entrance is framed in grey granite, which also clads the piers between the storefront bays, as well as the entire 2nd floor. The east facade spans five bays, with the storefronts grouped together in pairs, and the north facade on 58th Street has nine bays, with the eastern six storefront bays grouped into three pairs. The 2nd bay from the west end is filled by metal louvers, and the west end bay has a loading dock with roll-down metal gate and a recessed metal service door below a small vent. The 2nd floor has four windows of dark, bronzed glass in each bay, slightly narrower at the end panes than the middle ones.
The upper floors have bands of dark-glass alternating with dark-grey metal spandrels. The individual windows alternate single-panes with windows broken up horizontally into three shorter panes. There is a setback above the 11th floor, with additional setbacks above the 13th, 17th, & 19th floors. At the west end of the north facade, there are also setbacks beginning above the 7th & 9th floors. There is a double-height mechanical level at the top of the tower, with black metal vents.
The exposed part of the west elevation is clad in grey brick, with windows beginning at the 8th floor, and then dropping off off the setbacks. There are double-windows at the front (north) bay, followed by bays of four windows (narrowing at the various setbacks). The ground floor is occupied by a Starbucks coffee, and Bang & Olufsen electronics.
