Provincial Palace (Bruges)

Belgium / West-Flandern / Brugge / Bruges / Markt, 3
courthouse, Neoclassical (architecture), Neo-Gothic (architecture), listed building / architectural heritage, 18th century construction

The Provinciaal Hof ("Provincial Court") was formerly the seat of the West Flanders Provincial Council. Visitors to Bruges often assume that the Gothic-style edifice is one of the city's many medieval buildings, but its construction did not begin until 1887.

The Provincial Court stands on the former site of the Waterhalle, a covered warehouse which spanned the entire east side of the Markt for almost 500 years (1294 to 1787).

This imposing building in neo-Gothic style was constructed in two phases (1887-1892 and 1914-1921) and refers to the Gothic façades of the town hall of Bruges and Gruuthuse palace. Renowned artists such as Hendrik and Gustaaf Pickery carried out the interior decoration, the stained-glass windows and the ironwork. The building on the left side was originally intended to be the governor’s residence.
