unincorporated area / community, CDP - Census Designated Place
Waldorf Maryland is an unincorporated census designated place in Charles County Maryland. Most of the population around Waldorf lives in the planned community of Saint Charles.
Interestingly enough, Saint Charles was actually land purchased for a competing proposal to build Dulles Airport in Northern Virginia. When the Virginia location was selected, a decision was made to build a large scale planned community on the land.
Waldorf is known as a shopping destination for Southern Maryland and Prince George's County. The Saint Charles Towne Center opened in 1990 and is anchored by Macy's, Sears, JC Penney, Kohl's and Dicks Sporting Goods.
