Pitt Baseball Field

Pitt Field is home to the Richmond Spiders baseball team. Bleachers accommodating more than 600 people provide an excellent view of all the action, but fans often fill the grass hills outside the outfield fence as well. The parking lot located next to the field also offers prime viewing of the outfield, and fans can often be found setting up their own chairs at the end of the lot. The field is symmetrical, with left and right field lines 328 feet from home plate while the power alleys are 350 feet away. Dead center field is 380 feet from home plate. Interestingly enough, it was a baseball player who gave Richmond its Spider mascot. The name was born in 1894 after a local reporter was so baffled by a star pitcher's lanky arms and stretching that he labeled the action to be like that of a "clever creeping … spider."
