Mapúa University, formerly the Mapúa Institute of Technology (MIT, Mapúa Tech or simply Mapúa) is a private, non-sectarian, Filipino tertiary institute located in Intramuros, Manila and in Makati. It was founded by Don Tomás Mapúa in 1925. The name/acronym, MIT was solely based upon the American university, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, because later etymologists of the institute believe that it may gain same status as the American MIT if they will bear the same name, even on acronyms. The institute is a reputable source of engineers and topnotchers in the engineering board exams. Mapúa is the first institution to implement the four-term academic calendar in the Philippines. As of 2006, diplomas and official documents issued by the institute includes a footnote with the message "Malayan Colleges operating under the name of Mapúa Institute of Technology" noting the implementation of the name change of the administration.
