mine, platinum mine/processing
This is the Mimosa Platinum Mine which is the oldest platinum mine in Zimbabwe and is one the lowest cost producers in the world. Mining at Mimosa has a long history: the deposit was exploited briefly in the 1920s, and trial mining was undertaken by Union Carbide Zimbabwe between 1966 and 1975. Zimasco (a ferrochrome mining and smelting company) took over Mimosa in 1992. The pilot plant was refurbished, and mining recommenced in 1994. It is located in the Wedza sub-chamber of the southern portion of the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe, 150km from Bulawayo. The mine, the lowest cost mining operation in the Aquarius stable, is a relatively shallow underground operation accessed via a decline shaft, delivering ore to a surface concentrator with a monthly capacity of 185,000 tonnes. The mine is overseen by joint venture partners Aquarius and Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats).
