Ghior Upazila (Manikganj district) with an area of 145.95 sq km, is bounded by Daulatpur upazila on the north, Shivalaya and Harirampur upazilas on the south, Manikganj sadar and Saturia upazilas on the east, Shivalaya and Daulatpur upazilas on the west. Main rivers are old Dhaleshwari, Kaliganga, Ichamati, Gangdubi. Bairagir Beel is notable.
Ghior is located at 23.8875°N 89.8375°E. It has 24413 units of house hold. Ghior (Town) consists of two mouzas. The town has an area of 4.24 sq km and a population of 5882; male 53.5%, female 46.5%. Literacy rate among the town people is 53%. It has one dakbungalow.
Ghior thana was established in 1919 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 7 union parishads, 170 mauzas and 183 villages.
As of 1991 Bangladesh census, Population 127521: male 50.16%, female 49.84%; Muslim 86.13%, Hindu 13.62%, others 0.25%; ethnic nationals: Buno (locally called buinya) 85 families.
Average literacy 31.2%; male 38.4%, female 24%. Educational institutions: college (government) 1, college (non-government) 1, high school 17, madrasa 56, primary school (government) 61, primary school (non-government) 20. Old educational institutions: Ghior D N High School and Terassree K N High School.
Main occupations Agriculture 38.82%, agricultural labourer 21.61%, fishing 2.02%, construction 1.16%, commerce 11.98%, service 9.47%, transport 1.31%, wage labourer 4.57%, others 9.06%.
Land use Cultivable land 14595 hectares; single crop 44%, double crop 34%, triple crop land 22%; cultivable land under irrigation 32%.
