  • Subarnarekha (‘the streak of gold’, Hunter, W. W., 1877), an interstate river originating from Chhotonagpur plateau (at an elevation of 610m from msl) at a distance of 10 miles from Ranchi town of Jharkhand flows through Ranchi & Singbhum Districts of Jharkhand, Paschim Medinipur District of West Bengal & Balasore District of Orissa. It enters the Paschim Medinipur district on the north-west from Dhalbhum and passes through Jhargram subdivision intersecting the Gopiballavpur Police Station. At the South of Dantan it enters the Balasore district and finally falls into the Bay of Bengal near Kirtania in Balasore district of Orissa. The river drains a total catchment area of 18950sq.km. in the three states of which 13590sq.km in Jharkhand, 2160sq.km. in West Bengal and 3201sq.km. in Orissa (Government of Orissa, Subarnarekha Irrigation Project, Mayurbhanj, 2007). In its middle & lower course in the part of West Bengal & Orissa it has a huge sandy deposition along its course. Its banks are generally high & well defined. In rainy season, the river becomes gigantic in shape & size and during high flood it overflows its left bank points in the part of West Bengal and both bank points in the part of Balasore District of Orissa. The flood water flows towards different directions say south, east and north-eastward. The north-eastern flow falls into Kaliaghai River which originates from eastern part of Jhargram Subdivision & meets with Haldi River. In 2008 the devastating flood in the eastern part of Paschim Medinipur and western part of Purba Medinipur was caused partly by the inflow of Subarnarekha River water into Kaliaghai river through Dantan, Mohanpur, Khakurda & Narayangarh etc. It is noteworthy that the flood of Subarnarekha, 2008, was caused due to heavy rainfall in a short period of time in its upper and middle catchment. Pachakhali Nala, Kantua Khal, Dulung Nadi, Kusumi Khal, Palania Khal Bansikhal are important left bank tributaries & Asurgaria Nala, Sita Khal, Mohulia Khal, Basinda Khal, Shyamtarangi Khal Khaliori Nala are right bank tributaries of Subarnarekha River in the part of W.B. & Orissa. Subarnarekha meanders in its middle & Lower course & formed a number of ox-bow lakes in the lower part indicating the attainment of mature stage of development. The drainage pattern is dendritic all over the study region.
