Kelvinator

Kelvinator was founded in 1914 by engineer Nathaniel B. Wales and two former Buick executives. Following the development of a practical electric refrigeration unit, the Electo Automatic Refrigerating Co. was formed in the same year.In 1916, the company name was changed to Kelvinator, in honor of Lord Kelvin. Two years later, Kelvinator introduced the first refrigerator with automatic control.

In 1919, the company moved to West Fort Street, when the need for larger quarters arose. Machining, compressor assembly and jappaning, all took place at the factory, with the refrigeration boxes themselves being purchased elsewhere. By 1923, Kelvinator had 80% of the market for electric refrigerators. As demand rose it was decided to construct a new larger facility at 14250 Plymouth Road. Upon completion of the new factory in 1928, most operations moved to the new facility. The Fort Street plant, however, remained in operation and in 1934, it became the home of the company's factory service department. The property was still in use in 1941.
