The house was built in 1780 by the brewer Lorentz Sifvert with the ground floor serving as the brewery and the other floors as living quarters for the workers. In 1812 the building was bought by the city of Stockholm where it ended up serving as the headquarters for the city guards. These guards were known as the "sausages" and the Sifvertska barracks was called "The sausage pot". All sorts of beggars and thieves were brought here for safe-keeping. Later, during the cholera epidemic in 1834 the barracks were transformed into a temporary hospital with rooms for 239 patients. In the 1870's the movement of a lot of people from the country into Stockholm caused a grave shortage of housing. As a result, the Sifvertska Barracks became one of several emergency accommodations. Since 1976 this beautiful building has been the site of the Columbus Hotel.
