The oldest of 3 other penitentiaries to operate in the area. Built in the late 1800's by inmates, the penitentiary ceased major correctional operations by the late 70's. The last group of inmates left the establishment in 1989 and was decommissioned soon after.

The facilities are currently abandoned and entry is strictly forbidden.

  • they should re open this prison as a museum!
  • I agree totally.
  • My uncle Morris lived in our hometown Terrebonne and was a guard at St Vincent de Paul. Until the execrable Rte 25 was built we drove by its formidable walls on our routine way to Montreal. The prison, in some parts, should be opened for tours...a sort of Quebec ' Alcatraz '.
  • All Muslims should be locked up in there!
  • Currently reading Roger Caron's "Go Boy" - yes this prison should be open to the public - probably is more of a dark secret for the Cdn prison system like Oakalla in Burnaby. I wonder what the bill is for the province/feds to let it sit empty.....
