Alexander Macomb was born in Detroit in 1782. Although the troops he was commanding were continually pushed back by the British, he "won" the Battle of Plattsburg in upstate New York during the war of 1812 when the naval reinforcements for the British were defeated during the Battle of Lake Champlain and the troops retreated to Canada.
