The Regional Transport Office (RTO) on 16th March 2015 started the driving test for permanent car licences on the advanced track set up at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) near Nashik phata. About 152 people appeared for the test on first day, of which 100 successfully passed all three tests which included driving a car in 8-shape, H-shape and on a gradient.

  • A nice facility but ruled by driving school agents • Separate officials to conduct test for PMC and PCMC residents • For PCMC - 4 and 2 wheeler test are conducted in this facility • For PMC - only 4 wheeler test conducted in this facility. For some reason, 2 wheeler tests are still being conducted Alandi RTO(near Bombay Sappers) • For 4 wheeler - test involves 8(fully computerized), H and gradient test • Cars with only dual controls are allowed on the track & considering how people drive - I don't blame the officials for it. They have every right to think about their safety. Anyways what this means is either you hire a car from a driving school agent who are more than willing to fleece you for Rs 500-700 or use the IDTR car for Rs 100 - sounds reasonable but there is a catch. • Do not get too happy about the IDTR vehicle - if it is not away for service - it's a diesel indica car with a non-powered steering (read 'extra non-powered')and a hard clutch. So unless you are veteran, forget about clearing the test. • The agents hijack the officials and keep sending their candidates on the track one after another so in short your appointment has not meaning. One of agents ahead of me had about 30 students lined up for the test. • So here's my advice to reduce the stress - think of this activity as a picnic to a car 'racing' track - go there with a friend, carry lots of water, lots of patience and some snacks. The place has lot of trees and a nice breeze so it's kind of nice. • Be ready to be treated like a low life by the people in uniform but then they are just trying make humble citizens out of you. :-) • They have a short lunch break from 2 PM to 2:30 PM which was surprising • And by the way, if you are a PMC resident and if you manage to clear the test - don't take that sigh of relief so soon... you still need to submit your signed application to Alandi RTO to start the processing of your permanent DL. All the Best.. :-)
  • Hi, your info was helpful, and I got into the catch 22 - rented their car and failed the test. I now need to get a permanent license some how, do you have any advice?
