The railroad trestle over Bull Run near Union Mills was a key military target during the Civil War. The bridge, which carried the tracks of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, was destroyed and rebuilt seven times during the war. A Union blockhouse was located nearby to protect the railraod bridge. The remains of the Civil War-era abutments are still visible.
