Prized for its showy white flowers in early May, this tree is well planted throughout the city. Newport also has a reddish-pink flowering variety, Aesculus x carnea.

The Horsechestnut, originally imported from Balkan Peninsula, is a relative of our native Buckeye. Horsechestnuts are very tolerant of ocean and wind conditions. The seed pods and fruit are a favorite of children and resemble a buck’s eye.
