This is the oldest continuously operating air field in the United States. It was involved in many early aviation feats (first transcontinental flight, first transpolar flight).

Established in 1905 as a dirigible field to support coast defenses. It was upgraded to a fixed wing landing field in 1921. Designated 16 September 1925 in honor of Lt. Alexander Pearson, who was killed in 1924 in an aircraft accident.

Formerly home to the 321st Observation Squadron from 1922 to 1941.
