St Peter's Church (Marlow)

United Kingdom / England / Marlow / St Peter Street
Gothic revival (architecture), Roman Catholic church, Grade II Listed (UK), Augustus Pugin

A Grade II listed building. It was designed in the Gothic Manner by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin in 1846. Here is preserved an interesting relic said to be the mummified hand of St. James the Apostle. This relic had been in the keeping of the Reading Abbey until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. It passed through many vicissitudes after that, until it was purchased by Mr. Scott Murray in 1856 for his private chapel at Danesfield, and was finally brought to the church of St. Peter when the estate was sold.

  • St Peter's Roman Catholic Church was built by the elder Pugin in 1845-8. This small gothic church was one of the first new Catholic churches to be built following emancipation. and it has been somewhat altered since then with the addition of a modern chapel.
