The Alamana called Bridge Sperchios River and is known for the battle that took place there in April 1821 . In 1821 , Omer Vryonis , commander of the Turkish army descended 8,000 men from Thessaly to quell the revolt in the Peloponnese . Athanasios Diakos with his men took place in Alamana River (then called Sperchios river ) . The morning of April 23, 1821 began the battle Alamana , where the Greeks were forced to retreat from the numerically superior forces of the Turks . The Deacon refused to leave and stayed alone with 48 men to fight to the bitter end . After a long battle , he was captured and transferred to the Lamia on 24 April. After they refused to cooperate with the Turks , horribly tortured and died a martyr's way . The death of Athanasios Diakos shocked the people and he emerged as one of the iconic symbols of the Revolution of 1821 . The bridge Alamana located on the National Road , shortly after Lamia , 3 km west of Thermopylae , where is the memorial of the battle .
