The finest of all Marlow's Georgian houses, Marlow Place, facing Saint Peter's Street in Station Road, is a highly ornate box of a house complete with pediments, pilasters and a grand external staircase, visible from the May Balfour Memorial Garden in Institute Road. Dating from c.1720 Marlow Place was built by John Wallop, 1st Earl of Portsmouth. Marlow Place is believed to have been occupied by George II, when he was Prince of Wales. It dominated the surrounding area with its stables alongside. At one time the Royal Military Academy. In the 1950s it housed a girls' finishing school and today serves as very handsome offices.
