Kotzebue, AK

2006 population of 3,104. Largest city in Alaska's Northwest Arctic Borough, and is a primary transfer point between ocean and inland shipping. It is also the air transport center for the region, with a paved runway that can accomodate commercial jet aircraft, with daily service to Anchorage. The USAF Kotzebue AFS (Air Force Station) maintained manned radar and communications facilities on the base south of the city from 1952 to 1984.
There is archaeological evidence that Inupiat Eskimo natives have lived at Kotzebue since at least the 1400s.
