The new Wayne County Jail broke ground in fall 2011. The original cost was $300 million and it was to hold 2,192 beds in 715,000 square feet. It was planned to open in 2014, but construction was halted in 2013 when it was revealed that cost overruns had pushed the cost nearly $100 million overbudget, and criminal charges resulted. It currently costs the county over $1 million a month in interest and storage fees.
