Rookwood has been accepting burials since 1868. There was formerly a dedicated rail line from nearby Sydney Central rail station that brought the dead and the mourners directly to the cemetery.
The former station house stands in the grounds of the cemetery and is now commemorated by a memorial shaped like the original platform and includes some of the original stones from it.
The cemetery is reputed to be the largest still in use in the Southern Hemisphere at over 300 hectares (~740 acres).

  • hey cool i seen that platform near central.
  • That's interesting. In the UK, there is a cemetery called Brookwood Cemetery southwest of London and it was built in 1852. It did have its own railway with 2 small stations, and it had a pair of platforms at London Waterloo station, which is the busiest station in the country just like Sydney Central. It is smaller than Rookwood being about 500 acres.
