There are flights from Kolkata ( formerly Calcutta) to Siliguri from where you can take a van or jeep ride to Gangtok which is about 4-6 hours. Gangtok is also connected by road from Kalimpong - another hill city famous for baby oranges and darjeeling - the queen of all hill stations in India. Hotels are pretty cheap and foods are excellent. The hospitality of the hill people are legendary. One must taste the famous dumplings here ( momo's as they call it and not like those found in harish mukherjee road joints in calcutta and at Noida's Atta Market).
