formerly Houston's

Great fresh fish and other seafood. Owned and operated by the Houston's parent. nice atmosphere, good service, decent prices.

This location was originally two important things in New Orleans history. One, is the old location of a very old auto repair shop named Whitmire, Inc., It was last owned and operated by Sam Caston, whose father started it. There was an old mechanic there (long since passed) named Mr. Lehman (hope I spelled that right!) who knew EVERYTHING there was to know about cars (of his time). The business had been there since, if I'm not wrong, the early twenties. Prior to that, this was the location of the famous Higgins Boat manufacturers (or possibly their HQ), where the famous Higgins boats of WWII were made. I am pretty sure this is correct, but if anyone has better info, please advise. It was also a car dealership at one time. Photos soon --SR

  • Actually, Whitmire's opened in the early 1930s. It was first located on the riverside of St. Charles and Felicity (1768 St. Charles) and moved to the opposite corner in the 1970's. The business was started by James W. Whitmire and serviced vehicles and fleets until closing in the late 1980s.Mr. Caston ran the place and became the owner when Mr. Whitmire retired. What made this place so different from others was the personal service- they knew your name and maintained your car like it was theirs. We really miss the place and wish it would either return or that someone would adopt their philosophy of customer service.
