This is a really good place for hiking, being so close to the city. The trails go on for dozens of miles to the south and to the east. Don't get caught by security though, if you don't have permision to be here. They are concerned about dirtbike riders using machetes to vandalize the forest.

This area has been heavily logged in the past 100 years. In most of this area the redwood trees are under 25 years old. There remains a few groves of older trees, one such grove has 100 year old second growth and several ancient redwoods. Although the grove is occupied by endangered Spotted Owls, Green Diamond Resource Company has a permit to log their home territory. There will be no where to go. Also, the company plans to sell much of this tract to real estate developers. EF! Humboldt is working on a campaign to defend this area. Please check out http://efhumboldt.org

We have set up two tree-villages here that are occupied by forest defenders at all times. Green Diamond (formerly Simpson) plans to level two of the oldest groves of Redwoods here. We are taking this stand to bring attention to their devestating practices and to prevent the destruction of as much forest as we can cover. There are rope networks called traverses that allow travel from tree to tree 100 ft. above the ground. We are continually expanding these networks. We are looking for anyone who shares our passion to come and occupy these trees with us or help out on the ground and in town. contacts: contactefhum@gmail.com http://efhumboldt.org
