At the time of the 1980 eruption, this car was owned by Donald and Natalie Parker, who also owned a gold mining cabin near Meta Lake. It's not said if they had another house someplace else, but at the time of the eruption they were at the cabin with their nephew, Richard A. Parker (who was apparently a teenager or young adult). The blast flattened and incinerated the cabin, killing the aunt and uncle inside; the nephew was apparently caught in the open, as he was killed and his body thrown a long distance. The car was picked up from near the lake and thrown 60 feet to where it currently rests; the heat burnt off all the exposed paint on the car, but it was otherwise left surprisingly intact. It was left in place as a monument and a tourist attraction.
