The O2 Arena (London)

United Kingdom / England / Westham / London
 theatre, arena, olympic venue

The Millennium Dome, located at the Greenwich Peninsula, was originally built to celebrate the turn of the millennium. During 2000, it housed the Millemmium Experience exhibition and also hosted that year's Miss World pageant.

The Dome has the appearance of a large white marquee with twelve 100 m (328 ft) high support towers. The canopy, which is made of PTFE-coated glass fibre fabric, has a diameter of 365 m (1,197 ft) and a height of 52 m (170 ft). Its symmetry is interrupted by a hole through which a ventilation shaft for the eastern bore of the Blackwall Tunnel rises. Designed by Richard Rogers, the Dome was constructed from 1997 to 1999 and its total cost was £789,000,000.

From 2005 to 2007, the Dome was redeveloped as an entertainment district named The O2. The O2 consists of a multipurpose indoor entertainment arena, IndigO2, a multi screen cinema, The O2 Bubble, and the Entertainment Avenue (which features bars, clubs, and restaurants). The redevelopment cost £600,000,000 and was designed by HOK Sport Venue Event.

The O2 Arena has a seating capacity of 20,000 with 94 luxury boxes and is predominantly a concert venue. Events hosted in the O2 Arena include the 2009 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, the artistic gymnastics and basketball finals of the 2012 Summer Olympics, the wheelchair basketball finals of the 2012 Summer Paralympics, and the ATP World Tour Finals from 2009 to 2012.

  • Great venue this. I saw UFC 75 here. Changed quite a bit since I went to the Dome the first time!! Still think the Dome should have been built @ the NEC though, much more financially viable.
  • Labours waste of money. Need to build more houses instead!
  • not a single penny of Government money was spent on it actually, it all came from the lottery. and as the O2 no-one can deny its a sucesss now
  • Still, it is an impressive feature of enguneering, and an important part of the Greenwich Regeneration scheme, even if it did go over budget.
