Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville is the sixth largest city in the state of South Carolina. It is the county seat of Greenville County and one of the principal cities of the Greenville-Mauldin-Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), it had a municipal population of 58,409 and an urban population of 302,194 as of the 2010 census. The metropolitan area had an population of 636,986 in 2010 census.Greenville is the largest city of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area (CSA) which in 2006 had an estimated population of 1,203,795, making it the largest MSA in the state of South Carolina.

The first white settlement in what is now Greenville was a home and mill built on the Reedy River in 1770 by Richare Pearis. The town developed around the mill after the territory was formally ceded to the United States by the Cherokees in 1776. Greenville was incorporated by the South Carolina General Assembly as a city in 1869, and is believed to have been named after either American General Nathanael Greene or British statesman Lord Grenville.

Famous natives include athletes Kevin Garrett and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, singer Edwin McCain, scientist Charles Townes, psychologist John Watson, evangelist Bob Jones, Sr., and politician and civil rights activist Jesse Jackson. Doolittle's raiders trained at the nearby Donaldson Air Base. The only casualty of the Cuban Missile Crisis, U-2 pilot Rudolf Anderson, was also from Greenville and there is a memorial to him in Cleveland Park.
