Tindivanam is a town and a municipality in Villuppuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Important roads from north to south Tamil Nadu are passing through Tindivanam and similarly from west to east. It was first called as 'Tindirivanam' where Tindiri is Tamarind in pure Tamil and Vanam is Jungle. So it is called as 'Jungle Of Tamarind' in the olden days. This name is changed as days gone past.
Tindivanam is one among the three sub-divisions of Viluppuram District, Tamil Nadu. This small town situated about 65 km northwest of Cuddalore on the way to to puducherry(Pondicherry) to chennai highway. Ennairam, located near Tindivanam, has inscriptions about the Hindu shastras that date back to the 11th century. At a distance of about 15 km the Bommapuram Aadeenam maintained Mailam Murugan temple dedicated to Lord Muruga. There are many institutions and houses that promote Tamil language and literature. Thiruvakkarai, famous for its Vakkara Kali Amman Temple, is 25 km south of Tindivanam. Located on NH 45, Tindivanam is easily accessible by both road and rail. The nearest airport is at Chennai at about 120 Kms i.e 80 Miles.

Tindivanam was Constituted as Municipality in 01.04.1949 and it was subsequently upgraded as 2nd grade Municipality from 03.04.1970 and 1st grade Municipality from 22.05.98. Tindivanam is located at a distance of 120 Km from Chennai in South West Direction and at distance of 40 Km from Pondicherry in North West Direction.
