military, surface-to-air missile site / sam, former- dont use this category, historical layer / disappeared object, United States Air Force
Presently operating as the primary fuel storage site for the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, this area was once home to the 35th Air Defense Missile Squadron and its battery of 48 IM-99B/CIM-10 BOMARC surface-to-air missiles.
Constructed by Boeing under contract to the US Air Force in 1959, the site was activated for duty on June 1st 1960 and manned by the 35th Air Defense Missile Squadron, part of the United States Air Force Air Defense Command. Remaining active and on full 24/7/365 alert to respond to the threat of Soviet bomber attack for the next nine years, the battery and 35th Squadron were eventually eclipsed by the advent of ballistic missiles and formally deactivated on December 31st 1969.
Remaining largely unused for the next decade, the 48-bay missile bunker complex was turned over to the Niagara Falls Air Force Station and was extensively redevloped as a aviation fuel storage and distribution site. Today, little topside evidence of the former BOMARC batter exists, aside from two repurposed buildings and the remaining concrete outlines of several launcher sites.
