Founded in 1940 as the Research Laboratory of the Curtiss Wright Aircraft Company, Calspan became an independent Aeronautical Laboratory under the ownership of Cornell University after Curtiss Wright's 1946 departure from Buffalo, and has since become a leading aerospace and transportation technology company.

Today Calspan's Buffalo Campus contains several aerospace lab facilities which are used to design and evaluate cutting edge aircraft systems, chief among them being the largest, independently-owned wind tunnel in the United States. Capable of reaching a maximum wind speed of Mach 1.3 over test objects, the facility is also used to test civilian objects like windmill blades and sports equipment.

Calspan's Buffalo Campus is also home to numerous transportation research labs and evaluation facilities, the largest of which is the Vehicle Experimental Research Facility (VERF) on the South side of its property.
